All the Aunties On the Walls
Join me for the showcase of my Aunties with Deadly Stare art series at LA Artcore Gallery this July 8th to 15th!
Welcome to my Substack #23. Soundtrack for this post: Auntie Playlist
For the past few month, I have been churning out paintings out of my living room while binging on Outlander – a show I still don’t really understand. And churning is not quite accurate, as each painting has so many layers, and each layer has to dry before the next layer is added on. Each piece is oddly precious – not from wanting it to be precious – but from the time needed for the painting and glueing and cutting needs to dry. Did you know that before you spray paint the final varnish, you need to wait for 24 hours for the paint to dry and “cure” so it doesn’t crack?
It has all been so slow. That all being said, I was surprised when I walked around the gallery yesterday and counted 35 paintings leaning against the white walls. There are roughly 100 Aunties on the wall.
I will write a deeper reflection for you all later, but in the meantime – if you are in Los Angeles this week, please come by and check out the Aunties with Deadly Stare solo exhibition of my art at LA Artcore Gallery from July 8th to July 15th.
Opening Night – July 8th, 6pm to 8pm, featuring DJ Sima & Sidu

This show is a closure of some sorts - I started painting the series at the start of the pandemic and now I feel like I am done. And you will get to see most of them all at the show. At least thirty five of them.
Please come! More to come!
Yes: Why was Outlander so engrossing but also so weird! And also I felt like the initial premise was a bit of a copy cat to Octavia Butler’s Kindred, time travel, problematic relatives... but not the same...
